As of 2021 the population of Indian River County was 165,395. Indian River County Florida was not one of the original U.S. colonies, nor was it even part of the Louisiana Purchase. Florida was obtained by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams in 1819 as part of the Florida Purchase Treaty. A couple years later the state was organized, and the area of Indian River County first became part of what was known as St. Johns County. After numerous changes, Indian River County was created in 1925.

The Indian River is not a river at all. It is an estuary where the saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean mixes with the freshwater of Florida. The water is moved more by the wind and tides than it is by the flow of the freshwater that pours into it. The average depth of the Lagoons is only 4ft! There are six inlets that connect the Atlantic the Indian River: Ponce de Leon Inlet, Port Canaveral, Sebastian Inlet, Ft. Pierce Inlet, St. Lucie Inlet, and the Jupiter Inlet.
